Buttonwood Sundown

A few years back, after a couple of hours on the road coming back from Key West and being hungry, I turned into the driveway at Bayside Grille in Key Largo which looks out northwest toward Buttonwood Sound and Swash Keys. After a nice meal it seemed like a good opportunity to stroll around and see what the sights might be. The Grille restaurant was on the second floor and after a few shots there, …

Sedona’s Enchantment

I still remember the feeling I had driving toward Sedona on Highway I-17 going north from Phoenix, leaving around midday and making some stops along the way. It was a beautiful bright day, somewhat cool, and it was so very different from what I am used to in south Florida where the farthest you can see is maybe a mile or two due to the flatness and vegetation. Moving around in Arizona always produced a feeling …

Arizona’s Wide Open Spaces

A trip late last year for a conference in Arizona allowed me to visit places everyone should see when spending time in that beautiful state. Although I was there for nine days I quickly found out there is so much to see that it was not even enough time for the few places I did visit. This will be the first of a few installments about Sedona, the Grand Canyon, and a National Historic Landmark in Tucson, Mission San Xavier del Bac. …

TPC San Antonio, home of the Valero Texas Open

Original Article 24 Jun 2012 (there is 1 update below):  I had the opportunity to stay at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa in December of 2011, which is the setting for TPC San Antonio, including the AT&T Oaks Course where they play the Valero Open. From what I saw firsthand of the golf course, which I’ll admit wasn’t much, nothing looked easy on this course.

Downtown Clarksville and the Roxy

Original Article (there are 2 updates below): It’s been several years since I took the picture below and much longer since I had been downtown and at the Roxy Theater before that, in fact, going back to my college days at Austin Peay State University.  The theater looked the same but the lot next to it didn’t, mostly because there was no mural in those days and if my memory serves me right, there was a …

The Scimitar-horned Oryx

While travelling in Texas between Austin and San Antonio a few years back, I decided to take back roads to see what there was in the area. This area of Texas is somewhat dry with rolling hills and rough terrain. Along the way on Highway 281 there was a housing development which, from the outside, looked somewhat interesting. So I drove past the gates, partly up a hill, and was confronted with a small herd of about …

Lincoln Center, Miami Beach, and why did I take this picture?

Usually, you look over an area and you might like something about it, a bridge, the color of a sky, a feature of a building, etc. So you try to find the right angle or the way to highlight a feature or, well, there are lots of reasons to take a picture. But sometimes, I don’t know why I take a picture, or more precisely, why I take the picture I take. As in the …

Arch in Glass, the Espirito Santo Plaza Building, Miami

If you go anywhere near downtown Miami go south a little on US1/Brickell Avenue and you will pass the Espirito Santo Plaza building, North American headquarters for the Espirito Santo Bank. It’s got a grand entrance but, to me, its best feature is the concave glass arch high above. You can have a better appreciation if you’re a few blocks away as in the following image. The arch symbolizes the gateway to Latin America, similar to …

How to get a picture of a girl at the beach

First, you drive more than an hour out of your way to find the lighthouse you thought was a few minutes off the highway (I-75, near Boca Grande, Florida). You then spend another hour or so looking the area over, including the lighthouse, actually a lighthouse and a light tower, and then finding a chapel, all part of Gasparilla Island State Park. After you’re ready to go and somewhat tired (walking around the dunes, …

Coral Gables Lighthouse?

The first time I saw it was during my college days, a while back, and at that time I didn’t have a camera. It would have been interesting to see what had changed about the water tower since that time. But it’s very beautiful and interesting architecture, especially for a water tower. In fact, when I first saw it, I thought it was a lighthouse. It was a glimpse driving by but it stuck …

Trees floating over water?

This image has something unusual. If you look closely at the area where the trees are, they appear to be floating over the water. They aren’t but you can’t tell what’s below or around the trees. On further inspection, the trees have shadows underneath that look like inversions of the tree image with sunlight all around. This is actually a view across the water from Ft. Myers beach to Sanibel. Thanks for visiting, Ed Gleichman FineWorldPhotography.com …

Shimmering crab

Another example of refraction. I was reminded of it when I saw an image on Bing of dolphins swimming just beneath the surface of the water. This was taken in the late afternoon on a bright sunny day. I didn’t have to chase after the crab, it was running right past my feet Ed Gleichman FineWorldPhotography.com Ed Gleichman – FineArtAmerica   P.S. See  an earlier article on an example of refraction in my Shimmering …

Shimmering airplane

There are times that you just can’t get a sharp image of objects. It doesn’t matter what exposure setting, ISO setting, or for that matter, how much light there is. The image below is one of those. It was a bright day and very hot in Ft. Lauderdale.

St. Leo Abbey

You don’t have to travel to Europe or South America to visit a monastery or abbey. I don’t know how many there are in the US, probably quite a few, but I found one. By accident. I was riding around the north Tampa area in Pasco County with a friend when I happened to see almost the exact scene below, so I had him turn around.

Art Deco gallery addition

Updated 5 June 2013: A previous category of images, Art Deco, needed to be changed to Art Deco and Art Moderne due to some items I added from a small town in Tennessee, the Roxy Regional Theater in Clarksville. I’ve also added a few Art Deco images and it’s up to eight now but I’ll be adding more Miami Beach/South Beach images when I can. Thanks for visiting, Ed SOCIAL MEDIA & ONLINE PRESENCE: ARTICLES | ABOUT | TWITTER | …
