Coral Gables Lighthouse?

The first time I saw it was during my college days, a while back, and at that time I didn’t have a camera. It would have been interesting to see what had changed about the water tower since that time. But it’s very beautiful and interesting architecture, especially for a water tower. In fact, when I first saw it, I thought it was a lighthouse. It was a glimpse driving by but it stuck in my mind as something to look at again.

So, after finding it again, it was not really what I remembered but in many ways it was better. The Alhambra Water Tower in Coral Gables was built in 1924 as part of George Merrick’s artistic vision. It has been restored based on photographs taken when it was built and is now listed in the Coral Gables Register of Historic Places.

Would you prefer to have this in your city or the normal ball on a tower? Of course, with today’s financial problems, building a shell around something you must have is an added and unneccessary expense. But it seems we all lose something when we make those choices.
